Is sniffing tiring for dogs?
Short answer: yes, often more than you'd expect. Sniffing takes a lot of focus. A short session of searching for treats can leave a dog pleasantly tired, especially on days when a long walk isn't possible.
Why sniffing is so tiring
When your dog sniffs, their brain is working hard. They're picking up a scent, following it and working out where it's coming from. When treats are hidden in a toy, they also have to figure out how to get them out. That combination of focus and problem-solving uses energy in a different way than running around.
It's a bit like the difference between a walk and a puzzle for us. Both can tire you out, but in different ways.
How do you know your dog is mentally tired?
After a good sniffing session, many dogs:
- lie down or have a nap
- are calmer in the house
- stop asking for attention for a while
Every dog is different, so watch what your dog does rather than going by the clock.
How long should a sniffing session last?
- Puppies: a few minutes is enough.
- Adult dogs: five to fifteen minutes usually works well.
- Stop while it's still fun. It's better to end on a win than when your dog gets frustrated.
Can sniffing replace a walk?
No. Sniffing is a great addition, not a replacement. Your dog still needs movement and time outside. But on rainy days, busy days or when your dog needs to rest, nose work is a good way to keep them busy.
Tip: let your dog sniff on walks too. A slow walk with plenty of sniffing can be just as satisfying as a fast one.
Easy ways to add sniffing at home
- Scatter a few treats in the grass or on a rug.
- Hide treats under cups or in a rolled-up towel.
- Use a snuffle toy. Our Strawberry Jam enrichment toy has three levels, so you can make it easier on tired days and harder when your dog is full of energy.

No, that's the idea. Mental tiredness is a healthy kind of tired. Just don't overdo it, and stop before frustration sets in.

Many owners find it helps their dog settle. If your dog struggles with anxiety, ask a vet or behaviourist for advice that fits your dog.
